A message from our Clinical Director, Jillian

Let’s talk about Osteoporosis…

  • Osteoporosis is the loss of bone mass/density which increases your risk of breaking a bone because the bone becomes more fragile.

  • It’s often termed the ‘silent thief’ because people commonly don’t know they have osteoporosis until they fracture/break a bone (like hip, spine, wrist or shoulder).

  • Osteoporotic fractures are more common than heart attack, stroke & Breast Cancer combined!

How common is the diagnosis?

  • More than 2 million Canadians have it (that’s almost like the entire city of Toronto).

  • Over 80% of all broken bones in people over 50yrs old are caused by osteoporosis!

What should we do?

  • Tell your children, grandchildren & great grandchildren to make healthy bone choices now: exercise & healthy eating!  By 30yrs old, bones have maxed their size & strength & we start to lose bone.  The stronger your bones are early in life makes a huge difference!

  • Know your risk: Use the risk calculator tool called the FRAX

  • Specific types of exercises are critical, like:

    • IMPACT TRAINING: exercises that load your bones to help them get stronger, like  stomping or jumping.

    • FUNCTIONAL training: exercises that help you get stronger & more mobile during everyday tasks, like getting up from a chair or on & off the floor.

    • BALANCE training: exercises that challenge your ability to stay upright, both while you’re standing still or moving around.

    • RESISTANCE training: exercises that use weights or resistance bands to challenge key muscle groups to get stronger.

Client Success Story

Sue

“I was recently diagnosed with osteoporosis and was quite devastated about this diagnosis, as I am an active person who loves to be out in nature. My Therapist Kevin has been extremely helpful by designing an exercise program that is tailored to my needs. Over the years, I have tried many times to strength train and I would often get injured and give up. Kevin has continually adjusted to keep me moving forward with strength training. He is knowledgeable, professional, respectful, and I feel he is invested in helping me get stronger. He knows how important maintaining an active lifestyle is for me and he is doing his best to help me achieve specific goals, like hiking around my favourite lake.”

Nutrition Tip

Most people know that calcium is important for bone health, but did you know that Vitamin D is equally as important as it helps us absorb the calcium we eat?

Health Canada recommends adults age 51-70 need 600 IU and adults age 70+ need 800 IU of Vitamin D daily.
