Surgical Rehabilitation & Recovery

PhysioCare at Home offers surgical rehabilitation and recovery services for clients returning home from the hospital after surgery. Pain and swelling from surgery, medications, as well as muscle weakness, generalized stiffness and muscle atrophy from extended bed rest all contribute to greater risk of falling once the client comes home. Depending on the cause for hospitalization, deep breathing may be impaired, adding to the risk for pneumonia and the challenge of attaining full recovery.

We take a client-centered approach, considering factors such as what your movement goals are, what your current balance condition is and what pain control works best for you. We also work holistically with you, walking you through the healing process and examining environmental risks to falling (such as stairs, too much clutter, or ill-placed rugs).

We want to restore your movement so that you can live the life you want.

Betty – Age: 80

Betty had been hospitalized for pneumonia. After spending 3 weeks in the hospital, she was severely deconditioned and weak. Her daughter contacted Physiocare at Home saying, “My mom is so weak, she barely got out of bed in the hospital.”

During our assessment, we tested Betty’s balance and overall strength of her upper and lower extremities. We noted that her function was extremely limited. She had difficultly getting out of bed on her own, had to hold onto walls and chairs to get to the bathroom, was using a walker to steady herself and was very afraid of falling. Her stamina had also weakened; everyday taskss such as getting dressed or walking the dog were too fatiguing for her.

Our plan with her included:

  • Seeing her 2-3 times a week for the first few weeks, then once a week for a total of 8-10 weeks.
  • Teaching her bed exercises, standing exercises, balance exercises and breathing exercises.
  • Advising some simple modifications to her home to improve safety
  • Giving general education to help her move more efficiently and conserve energy
  • Reaching her goal of full recovery so she could get back to her usual routines, including walking her dog

Because of Betty’s motivation to get back to her ‘old’ self, she faithfully performed her daily exercise program and worked hard with her Physiotherapist. After working consistently with Betty to help her progress through her physical challenges she was able to attain full recovery. Betty will never forget the day she could walk her dog again!
